How you can easily empty the washing machine filter with a PET bottle

October 23, 2024

If your washing machine no longer pumps properly or develops an unpleasant odour, the filter could be clogged. However, cleaning this filter can sometimes cause a bit of a mess, especially if water has built up inside the machine. Here we show you a clever trick for using a simple PET bottle to do the cleaning properly and without flooding.

What you need:

  • An empty PET bottle (0.5 litres or more)
  • A towel or cloth
  • A small bowl (optional)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Switch off the washing machine: Before starting work, make sure that the washing machine is switched off. Pull out the mains plug to ensure that no more electricity is flowing.
  2. Open the filter access: In most washing machines, the filter is located at the bottom at the front, behind a small flap. Open this flap to access the filter.
  3. Preparation for the water: Normally, some residual water always collects in the filter area. Place a towel or cloth around the area so that nothing runs over the floor. A small bowl can also be helpful to catch the water.
  4. Prepare the PET bottle: Now comes the trick! Cut off the bottom of the PET bottle. You can then hold the bottle with the opening (the lid) facing downwards at an angle under the filter while you slowly unscrew the filter. This allows the water to run into the bottle instead of onto the bottom.
  5. Drain the water: Carefully open the filter so that the water flows slowly into the bottle. When the bottle is almost full, close the filter and empty it into the sink. Repeat this process until no more water comes out.
  6. Clean the filter: As soon as no more water comes out, you can remove the filter completely and clean it under running water. Also check the filter area in the washing machine for possible residues.
  7. Reinsert the filter: Replace the cleaned filter and close the flap. Your washing machine should now work again without any problems.

Why this trick is so helpful: With a PET bottle, you can drain the water easily and in a controlled manner without it running onto the floor or into the washing machine chute. This is particularly useful if you don't have a large drip tray to hand or access is restricted.

Conclusion: With this simple trick and an old PET bottle, you can save time, effort and mess when cleaning the washing machine filter. Try it out during your next maintenance and keep your machine in top condition.

Tip: Regular cleaning of the filter extends the service life of your washing machine and ensures better washing results.
