Dust off properly

September 15, 2023

Proper dusting in your home is important to remove dust, allergens and dirt and create a clean environment. Here are some steps on how to dust properly:

Materials required:

  • Duster or microfibre cloth
  • Duster
  • All-purpose cleaner (optional)
  • Disposable gloves (optional)

Steps:

  1. Preparation: Start by preparing your home. Open windows and doors to let in fresh air and remove dust.
  2. Vacuum cleaning: Before you start dusting, vacuum the floor, carpets and upholstered furniture. This sucks up loose dirt particles that could be whirled up during dusting.
  3. Dust cloths or microfibre cloths: Use a clean dust cloth or a microfibre cloth. These cloths attract and hold the dust instead of just spreading it around.
  4. Damp wipe (optional): For stubborn dust or on surfaces that can easily be wiped with a damp cloth (e.g. painted furniture), you can moisten the cloth slightly with water or an all-purpose cleaner.
  5. From top to bottom: Start at the top of a room and work your way down. Start by dusting shelves, furniture surfaces and decorations. Don't forget picture frames and electronic devices.
  6. Horizontal surfaces: Wipe horizontal surfaces in straight lines to collect the dust. If necessary, use a light pressure technique to loosen stuck dust.
  7. Vertical surfaces: Dust vertical surfaces such as walls, door and window frames and light switches. These areas are often overlooked, but collect dust over time.
  8. Decorations and accessories: Also dust decorations, lampshades and accessories. If you have delicate items, use a feather duster to clean them carefully.
  9. Floors last: After you have dusted all surfaces, sweep the floor again or use a hoover to pick up any dust that may have fallen.
  10. Wash your cloths: After dusting, wash your dust cloths or microfibre cloths to remove the collected dust.
  11. Dispose of the dust: Empty the hoover bag or collection container in a sealed bag to ensure that the dust does not get back into your home.

By following these steps, you can dust your home effectively and thoroughly and create a clean and healthy environment.
