Clever and simple: descale the tap with a balloon

May 11, 2024

Have you ever tried to clean the filter on your tap and found that it just won't unscrew? It can be frustrating, but don't worry, there's a simple solution! In this blog post, we'll show you how to effectively descale your tap using a simple household item - a balloon.

Why is regular descaling important?

Before we get to the actual method, let's talk briefly about why regular descaling of your tap is so important. Limescale build-up can affect the performance of your tap, reduce water flow and even cause leaks. With regular maintenance, you can avoid these problems and extend the life of your tap.

What you need:

  • A balloon
  • Descaler (e.g. citric acid or vinegar)
  • An Englishman or a suitable key (if possible)

Steps for descaling the tap:

Try to remove the filter: Firstly, you should try to remove the filter from your tap in the usual way. To do this, use an Englishman's spanner or a suitable spanner to carefully loosen it.

If the filter cannot be removed: If the filter won't come off or you don't have access to it, here's the clever balloon trick. Take a balloon and cut it off at the top to enlarge the opening.

Fill the balloon with descaler: Pour a generous amount of descaler, be it citric acid or vinegar, into the balloon. Make sure you use enough to cover the entire tap.

Place the balloon over the tap: Place the balloon over the tap so that the opening covers the tap. Make sure that the balloon is firmly in place and that no air can escape.

Leave the descaler to work: Leave the descaler to work for at least 30 minutes. This gives it enough time to dissolve the limescale deposits and clean the tap.

Remove the balloon and rinse out the tap: After the descaler has taken effect, remove the balloon and rinse the tap thoroughly with clean water to remove all residues.

Conclusion:

Descaling a tap can be a simple but important maintenance measure to extend the life of your tap and improve water quality. With this clever trick of using a balloon, you can effectively remove even stubborn limescale deposits, even if the filter is not easy to remove. Give it a try and enjoy a smooth flow of water in your kitchen or bathroom again.
